Surface Book 2 - Cursor freezes and mouse stops working randomly

Hi there :)

I post this to know if some other people are getting this issue too with the Surface Book 2 (15" model here).

Since the last firmware / drivers update (August 2018 / link), my mouse (G502, connected via USB) randomly stops working after a few seconds / minutes. The cursor just freezes, and the mouse becomes unresponsive (while the mouse is still powered by the Surface). After a while, the cursor starts to move again as usual.

Depending on the battery mode, the random freezes are more or less frequent (more if I use max performance mode), as the mouse cursor movement has an influence on the clockspeed of the processor.

I tried my mouse on a Macbook Pro to see if it was hardware related or not, and it's not, the cursor didn't hang once while on macOS. So I guess it's software related (W10) since the last SB2 update ?

I also tried to switch between the two USB ports, same thing.

I tried to see if it wasn't related to a firmware update of my mouse via the Logitech suite, but no nothing has changed.

Any idea ?

Regards :)

Ps : Here is a link to the Reddit post I wrote (link)

EDIT :

Today I tried to uninstall the Logitech Gaming Software (used to customize the mouse), and until now it seems to fix the issue.

Actually, Logitech did an update of his software that I missed, so I installed it a few hours after I installed the Surface Book 2 firmware update.

Maybe the two are now incompatible ?

Mine was fixed in an october update in 2018.

    I'm running a Razer mouse at 2400dpi

I've got nothing to suggest other than checking the firmware on the mouse and laptop is up to date

Wow, I have had this problem for about a year. First I thought that it was because of the Dock, so I bought the new one this spring. Problem won't disappear. Then I thought it is my very old mouse (Logitech G700s) and bought a new one (G502). But the mouse still freezes and jumps to the place where it should be.

Micrsoft you still don't have a solution for this problem after two years? You actively advertise that the Surface Book 2 is suitable for gaming and then gaming mice don't work? Is this a bad joke?

I have always been a fan of the Surface series but it's details like this that make you stop recommending products...

I think this issue is across the entire surface family product. As the previous posts suggested, the only current way to get rid of this is to lower your polling rate of the mouse. Modern gaming mouse typically have polling rate 1000(that's why it's called gaming mouse), but unfortunately, you need to downgrade the polling rate to be able to use it properly. It's kind of sad since this bug is not very urgent to the most SB users I suppose. That's why MS hasn't done anything about it.

Polling rate is correct. I thought it was my mouse. Logitech even sent me a new one. However before it got to me I discovered the polling rate. That adjustment fixed all studdering, lag, jitter, freezing, whatever  you want to call it.  Is there a chance the razer is resetting the polling rate after you config it? Sorry to hear about your troubles. I love my SFB2 although it is not my full time gaming computer it works as one when needed.

Pooling rate is just the response time and location info the mouse sends to the computer and how fast or often it does it.

Do standard mice work for example like a office mouse?

SAME ISSUE AS YOU GUYS EVEN IN 2020!!!  I got SP6 with Surface Dock (gen2, since gen1 was actually for SP1/2) and Logitech mouse polling 1000.  Unfortunately, setting polling to 500 only alleviates the problem but does not solve it!!!  Strangely, this only happened when reset my SP6 recently, thinking it will clean things up but I see others have had this issue too.  It's something to do with the Surface Dock, as if I directly connect the mouse to the SP6 USB, then everything works perfectly.  PLEASE FIX THIS MICROSOFT!!!

Edit:  I just tried another gaming mouse Corsair with 1000 polling and it did the same thing when connecting to the Surface Dock.  Can't tell if the Surface Dock is starting to break or there is something wrong with the firmware.

Edit 2: I tested on an SP4, connected to the same Surface Dock, and guess what, NO MOUSE LAG.  So actually it's not even the Dock, it's my SP6 that is the problem.  It has to be the recent firmware updates on 07/09/2020.  That firmware updated for Surface Dock 2, and I bet it broke something when connecting to a Surface Dock 1.  MICROSOFT PLEASE FIX!!!

I have had this problem too but found an unlikely 'fix' that works for me at least. The problem only happens for me when I am working on a desk with a metallic surface as I have at home. When I work in other locations on traditional wooden desks there is no problem. At home I have to stop charging to stop it happening the whole time. As far as I can tell all other things are the same e.g. in all cases I am close to the power supply, charger is the same etc. Anyway - only stumbled on this 'solution' but makes me think there is some strange interference between the charger and the pc that cannot resolve due to the surrounding environment. No idea why this would be the case, but have confirmed problem/no problem about 20 times in past month and I never have the problem when away from that specific desk.
