If the device stays idle for a minute it directly shuts down. I have checked all the sleep and power settings and that's not an issue. I see this was an issue in previous versions too. **Any fix?**There are some answers to this which might have worked for some (marked as answer), but definitely not for everyone. If you face it, I strongly recommend returning it as the stress during this whole process is ridiculous and not worth it.
UPDATE:
After going through returning and rebuying 4 surface pro 7 devices (thanks to Costco). I decided to ditch it. The worst part is that Costco has essentially banned me from buying any laptops from them, even though I repeatedly told them that the devices were having issues. I just loved the device for its utility and I really wanted it to work out. Microsoft and Costco should beashamed** of this.
The first 3 devices were returned in <1-2 months. The 4th one stayed longest (3 months), not because it was perfect but because of the pandemic. I loved the device in general. I was hoping I would not have problems with the 4th device. I did not have the random shutdowns but I started having

Many thanks! I actually was interested because I both needed a tablet + a laptop. Great part of my job is to teach some BI softwares which are only available for full OS (some of them like Power BI only availbale for Windows, so that pretty much ruled out everything else), plus I spend much time of the day reading documents and papers, which is not very comfortable to do on a laptop. On top of that, being able to draw with my hands when teaching online would be very nice for me, it's a bit weird trying to do so with my mouse as I do now.
I was doubting between something like a Surface Pro, which is more expensive but solves both problems and doesn't involve carrying multiple devices, and going simply for a laptop + tablet, which could even be cheaper and less problematic for what I see...
Appart of the shutting down problem, do you experience any other issues, like overheating or stylus not working correctly?

Yeah exactly - if you can get a Surface Pro that is working, it's kind of a dream device for all of that. I have only had the Pro 7 for 6 weeks, but my stylus works really well. It's one of the reasons I got a Surface Pro.
I was going to say I haven't had any problems with overheating, but that's not completely true. I've just prevented it from happening by changing the power setting, and then forgot all about it. But if I have the power set to "Best Performance", especially when it's plugged in, it does get hot and the fan runs a lot (I haven't had it shutdown or anything yet). I have ample power, even on the reduced settings, so it hasn't really bothered me. Obviously, in an ideal world, that shouldn't be necessary. But again, I feel like I have no better device options. So as long as it's stable, I deal...and generally am very happy with it.
I agree. It is definitely worth it if you can get the shutdowns resolved like I did. I also used option 4 , I believe I also did whatever updates were available in Intel cc. Honestly I don't regret purchasing this device. I bought it through best buy and I have the best buy protection , so that gives me peace of mind that if anything happens I'm good. (With my Samsung watch , if I drive over it on accident they will replace it. Not like that will happen but to me that's worth what I pay a year for it. ) anyway , I use my sp7 for school and for things I'd normally use my phone for. I generally watch videos on it (when not in school.) I keep the keyboard attached almost 90 percent of the time (when I watch videos I flip the keypad under the pad.) This sp7 replaced my phone and my gaming laptop for a good majority of what I do (I do not play games on it , I found the games I play to be too taxing on the pad and I default to the laptop for that, besides that the keypad on the sp7 doesn't have a numpad) so like the other person stated it definitely depends on your lifestyle and needs. I use it for anything not gaming related or things that I can only do with my phone . Again, I do not regret buying it . Although when I was having the issue I did get very frustrated and would have returned if I didn't make it to this forum and read about option 4. So I get why people are upset, I'm a lucky one . So I guess if you feel like it could work for you go for it. Be aware that during covid some companies are not taking returns , so be sure to look into that before you buy in case you need to. Alright well , I hope this helps.
Ps. No issues with mouse , pen, and i think it overheated once (when it did the false shutdown, black screen) the problem like others stated is basically the pad stays on but the screen shuts off, so I thought it shut down so I'd hear the fans running after a bit. I have not had overheating since that was resolved. She gets warm sometimes, but nothing like my gaming laptop.
After more than 2 weeks of testing (no update in the meanwhile) I can confirm that option 4 worked for me. Let's see if updates will crush everything.
Number 4 was easy to install and fixed the problem so far.
It is really great that some folks take the time to post and help the rest of us out.

I have used Option 4 after a few days, it is still working. Hope it stays that way. One thing I noticed is that the back of the surface is no longer so hot.
