Surface Book 3 Brightness dimming on dark and light screens

UPDATE 3:

Hey guys, I have updated to version 2004, allowed time for more updates that came through, and the issue seems to be gone. Not sure which update actually fixed this... Overtime it seems to have stopped doing this. I have been waiting for a bit before posting on here to make sure, and it hasn't reappeared. In the Intel Command Center, the power savings and adaptive brightness are still off. Has anyone else experienced a fix in this issue? Of course there are some new bugs with the 2004 update(Screen flickering), but I'm sure those will be fixed soon!

UPDATE 2

I had found a fix to this problem. Update to Windows Version 2004, then do the Intel Command Center trick, and it worked. However after updating the computer again the next day, it was back to the same issue. Intel Command Center doesn't turn it off anymore. The problem still persists.

UPDATE:

I tried detaching the screen to detach from the Nvidia drivers as they seem to be in the keyboard part of the system. The brightness issue was still there so this may rule out the Nvidia driver being the problem? Not quite sure the internals though so this could be wrong.

Hello! I just got a new Surface Book 3 and noticed that the brightness changes by itself. I turned off the setting in the Display section that changes it when the lighting conditions change, and that solved that.

Now to the real problem: Whenever I open a primarily dark colored screen, the brightness goes down. When I open a primarily light screen, the brightness goes up.

You can imagine that this is a horrible feature for pretty much anything you are trying to do. (ex; using multiple tabs, playing a video game, editing photos and zooming in on details, etc.) If the brightness is turned all the way up then a white background screen is way too bright. If it is all the way down and you look at a dark screen? It is so dark it's pretty much turned off.

This is My SBook Model:

Surface Book 3

i7 256GB, 16GB RAM

Intel Iris Plus Graphics+Nvidia 1650

This is what I have tried:

  • Installing the Intel Command Center and disabling both the adaptive brightness feature and the display power saving feature.
  • Uninstalling and reinstalling the latest Intel driver(worked for a bit, then started back up)
  • Disabling the Intel driver then re enabling it.
  • The Nvidia control panel only has 3D video options so that won't help. (I have heard people saying that you can disable this feature in the Nvidia control panel, if it were an option)
  • Contacting Microsoft Support and going through that whole process(They did everything I did above and a Windows Diagnostics Tool Check which resulted in "No errors being found."
  • Attempted to uninstall and reinstall the Nvidia drivers but wan't able to.

Has anyone else had this issue? I found lots of forums online for it and tried what they suggested, but that didn't work. I know most brand new products usually have quirks like this out of box but if someone has an answer I would love to hear it!

Thanks!

This issue was also present for me on my AMD Surface 3. This blog has an intel fix, as well as one that worked for me on AMD:

Thank you for your reply. After considerable live telecons with MS Tech reps, they concluded there was a fault in the MS Surface3. It was swiftly replaced it by a new one. No problems at all now.

    Gratefully,

    DJ

I don't have the problem you are experiencing. What do you mean by 'updating every two days', updating what? I suggest that you should use the Microsoft Ethernet adaptor cable. Start the computer but don't load any applications just let it sit and automatically update Windows Defender antivirus and let that run for an hour or so without touching the computer. You should not use a separate antivirus or constantly running Malware program.
Stop using the Nvidea graphics processor until you see an improvement in the SB3. Of course that means you cannot use Photoshop CC or Lightroom Classic.

When finished working I recommend that you fully close the SB down and not use sleep.
I think I said in an earlier post that when using the Nvidea graphics processor you should turn it off before attempting to remove the screen. This bug may have been fixed but screen detach and reattach has been perfect for me since I changed the graphic processor preference to auto. I too use Photoshop and Lightroom Classic.

    Hope this helps,

    Ian

I just purchased the book 3 for $2,600 in May and it is still an issue with the new models. I am actually very disappointed because this computer would be perfect without the little bugs that make photography and design very annoying. If I don't update it every 2 days then is freezes and the mouse will glitch and move erratically around the screen. If I separate the screen, flip it, and reattach it it will freeze completely and it takes about 20 minutes for it to be able to power down (even when there are no windows open or software running). If anyone else sees this and has similar problems please let me know if there are solutions. I want to love this computer, and honestly there's nothing on the market right now that really can compare so I might just tough it out. But when you purchase something that is supposed to be functional and its acting like this right out of the box, I'm tempted to just return it.
