Duo 2 Android 12L breaks calling

Since the Android 12L update, I have not been able to make or receive calls. Incoming goes straight to voicemail and outgoing immediately ends calls. Carrier is T-Mobile. I suspect the issue is the same at what happened with the AUS phones as listed here Android 12 Breaks Calls — ZenTalk (asus.com)

This required an update to get the calls working again. Is there such as update in the works as right now my due 2 is just a tablet that cannot make calls.

Everything else works btw even calls with WhatsApp and teams

Updated 12/8/2022 - Marking as "Answered" to raise visibility for now. We will update this response with more information.

Thank you for reporting this issue. If you are encountering this issue (incoming calls go to voice mail and outgoing calls end immediately), a fix has been released today, December 8th, and is available by updating your Surface Duo 2. For more information on how to update your Surface Duo 2 see Update Surface Duo.

Please let us know if this does not resolve the issue you are seeing. If it does not resolve the issue you are seeing, one thing to try is to temporarily insert a SIM from a different mobile operator and then change back to the SIM you are using. If you are encountering a different issue, please start a new thread by clicking Ask a new question in the upper right corner.

Here are the steps:

  1. Press and hold the power button for a couple of seconds, and then choose the Power off option to turn off your Surface Duo 2.
  2. Take out your current SIM.
  3. Insert a SIM from a different mobile operator (not your existing mobile operator).
  4. Press the power button to turn on your Surface Duo 2 and sign into your device.
  5. Once the device connects to the mobile network, press and hold the power button for a couple of seconds, and then choose the Power off option to turn off your Surface Duo 2.
  6. Take out the SIM and then place your original SIM back into your Surface Duo 2.
  7. Press the power button to turn on your Surface Duo 2.

If updating your Surface Duo 2 or the above steps do not help, please contact support for Surface devices by going to https://support.microsoft.com/contactus, click on the link to show the expanded list of products, then click Surface devices.

Around 11/28/2022 my Microsoft Duo 2 (Phone function only) stopped working. When making a call, the call, immediately (internally) terminates. Incoming phone calls, immediately go to voice mail. Everything, except the phone function, works wonderfully and I absolutely LOVE this device and it's functionality.

From a trouble shooting standpoint, I have talked repeatedly with T-Mobile, we have validated the SIM card works in another phone. I have reset all network settings, I have restarted, rebooted, turned on and off SIM. Lastly, I did a total reset of the phone, wiped out everything and started over.

From a version standpoint, the phone is:

    Build 2022.817.23

    Android Version 12

    Model Surface Duo 2

Phone bought new, and is been in use for 3+ months, never dropped, no water, nothing. Essentially like new.

This feels like a software update to me because EVERYTHING on the phone works, except the phone function.

It appears Surface Duo 2 support is limited, and this is very impactful.

Problem reoccurred today and resolved with the previous fix. Rather disappointed in MSFT's lack of response, support, and resolution of this issue.

    Same.

Mine went back to broken this morning following a reboot. Calls ending immediately, incoming calls straight to VM. I rebooted because all of a sudden DTMF tones were not working for automated call attendants.

Did the SIM swap again, and like magic everything works (for now).

T-Mobile does show the device as a Surface 3 as I have seen noted by others. I think there is something to the theory of some background carrier settings re-provisioning happening after the fact based on it being detected as a different device on TMo's back-end.

I guess I will have to carry an old Verizon SIM in my wallet for the foreseeable future to fix this whenever it happens. I do not look forward to opening a technical case with T-Mobile, but I suppose it needs done to help raise some kind of awareness with them.
