Duo 2 Android 12L breaks calling

Since the Android 12L update, I have not been able to make or receive calls. Incoming goes straight to voicemail and outgoing immediately ends calls. Carrier is T-Mobile. I suspect the issue is the same at what happened with the AUS phones as listed here Android 12 Breaks Calls — ZenTalk (asus.com)

This required an update to get the calls working again. Is there such as update in the works as right now my due 2 is just a tablet that cannot make calls.

Everything else works btw even calls with WhatsApp and teams

Updated 12/8/2022 - Marking as "Answered" to raise visibility for now. We will update this response with more information.

Thank you for reporting this issue. If you are encountering this issue (incoming calls go to voice mail and outgoing calls end immediately), a fix has been released today, December 8th, and is available by updating your Surface Duo 2. For more information on how to update your Surface Duo 2 see Update Surface Duo.

Please let us know if this does not resolve the issue you are seeing. If it does not resolve the issue you are seeing, one thing to try is to temporarily insert a SIM from a different mobile operator and then change back to the SIM you are using. If you are encountering a different issue, please start a new thread by clicking Ask a new question in the upper right corner.

Here are the steps:

  1. Press and hold the power button for a couple of seconds, and then choose the Power off option to turn off your Surface Duo 2.
  2. Take out your current SIM.
  3. Insert a SIM from a different mobile operator (not your existing mobile operator).
  4. Press the power button to turn on your Surface Duo 2 and sign into your device.
  5. Once the device connects to the mobile network, press and hold the power button for a couple of seconds, and then choose the Power off option to turn off your Surface Duo 2.
  6. Take out the SIM and then place your original SIM back into your Surface Duo 2.
  7. Press the power button to turn on your Surface Duo 2.

This has been an on going issue that got worse with 12L. Before 12L it happened once since I got the phone in Feb (Android 11). Since 12L It has happened 3 times. I tried all the resets and voice calls and APN settings with no luck. The fix that has worked for me and I have now invested in because I know it'll happen again:

Insert a Verizon Sim I finally went and purchased a prepaid Sim with no service that I carry around with me, paid $10 at best buy. Whenever it happens

    • I turn off my phone take out my T-mobile sim,
    • Insert the Verizon Sim (no Service Required)
    • Turn on phone
    • Attempt a call (which wont go through cause no service)
    • Turn off my phone
    • Reinsert my T-mobile Sim
    • Turn on phone, and it works again.

For those who haven't experience this...yet... you are lucky I went 6 months without experiencing it and it was great. it is definitely an intermittent issue and I could be wrong but I only seem to see the reports of this happening for T-Mobile customers. It make your phone feel useless because it is an instant call rejection, and you try restarting with the same issue. and it is so embarrassing to say hay Verizon friend can I borrow your sim card to make my phone work...

It has been present for a long time and this is the thread on reddit which had the fix I decided to try (from a year ago.) https://www.reddit.com/r/surfaceduo/comments/qk07ra/tmobile\_phone\_call\_issue/

That's what I did. $1 for a non-active SIM from Best Buy. So far, I am having to re-do the process about every two days.

NOT a fix, but somewhat of a solution...I guess?

I am having the same issue for about a week now, but it didn't start right after the 12L update. It seems to have started a few weeks later, around November 23rd. I have the duo 2 with T-Mobile. Data and texting works but no calls in or out.

Unfortunately, I cannot try removing my T-Mobile SIM and inserting another carrier's because I am using an electronic SIM (slot 2) that required calling T-Mobile when I first bought my phone. I have a physical SIM in slot 1 that I used internationally. Can you offer another way of disconnecting and reconnecting the T-Mobile service?

    Thanks for your help!

I bought a $1, non-active SIM card from Best Buy. I'm currently have to swap it out every few days, to get my phone working.

Also, mine didn't start right after the update, either. It was a couple of weeks after, if I recall correctly. No idea what's caused it, why it's happening, or how to permanently fix it.

As for the eSIM...no clue. Maybe if you went into your settings, told the phone to use the physical SIM, and then powered it off, back on...and then set it back to the eSIM? Not sure, since I don't have an eSIM for my phone.

And it's weird to me that you even have an eSIM, because I'm on Mint Mobile, which is carried on T-Mobile's network, and they (Mint) told me that they didn't offer an eSIM for the DUO.

Hope that SOMEONE figures this out soon, because this switching back and forth is getting REALLY ANNOYING!!!
