Surface Laptop Studio will not charge occasionally / depletes battery at alarming rate.

Every once in awhile my Surface Laptop Studio will refuse to charge - or atleast it says it's charging but clearly isn't. The battery then depletes at a rate of almost 1% every minute until in shuts off at 0%. Then I have to repeatedly restart it, plug in charging cable, for almost an hour to get it to start charging again. This isn't a charger issue. This is possibly some odd software issue.

Why Microsoft wants be to make a post instead of talking to an employee is beyond me.

Marking as Answered to raise visibility - Updated July 17, 2023

Thank you for your patience and feedback as we worked on this. A fix is now available through Windows Update. After installing the update, please restart (not Shutdown) your Surface Laptop Studio. For more information about updates for your Surface available through Windows Update see Download drivers and firmware for your Surface

For more details about Surface Laptop Update History, please see Surface Laptop Studio Update History.

If the issue continues to occur, here is a workaround that has helped others start charging again:

  1. Connect your Surface power supply and make sure the power connector light is on.
  2. Save all your work and shutdown your Surface.
  3. Once shutdown, press and hold down the power button, you will see the Windows logo screen flash and then turn off, continue to hold down the power button (about 20 seconds) until you see the Windows logo screen flash again and then release the power button.

    Hi Jerry,

This is becoming increasingly frustrating and infuriating. There are several of us and probably many more who CANNOT USE OUR LAPTOPS PROPERLY!! This battery draining issue is happening almost daily for me, I'm an ecommerce business owner and after investing $2500 into this laptop in June, it is negatively affecting my business!!! I always think I'm good, it's plugged in, it shows charging.. but then in the middle of something important the thing gets a warning to charge and shuts down. After it turns off I have to push the power button SEVERAL times in order to get it to turn back on, and most recently today it showed a black screen that said 'repairing C drive' after I held the power button down and it finally turned on again ... What is going on?!

Offering a refurbished laptop that will probably do the same thing again is not a solution!! Also I don't have a second computer and I absolutely cannot go 2 weeks without a computer. I can't even go 24 hours without using my computer. Microsoft must fix this issue asap! I'm sure most of us will never buy Microsoft again after having an issue like this, especially after seeing how you are not fixing the issue or offering a suitable solution. This is your chance to retain your customers. I've been buying the surface pro since the early days and have been a loyal customer since, but this is absurd guys. Are you working on a fix? Can we all complain to our credit card companies about receiving faulty products and file chargebacks or something?

After several communication with customer service of Microsoft, they sent me refurbished device and still I have similar stop charging problem with refurbished device as well. Definitely it is software issue most probably what they called "smart charging features" in surface laptop studio. The reason why I think it is software issue is because of the fact that it resolved when laptop died or even after forced turning of laptop and maybe Microsoft can solve it by updating battery frameware.

I was a Mac user and switch to surface laptop studio because ok of it's features and right now completely disappointed and frustrated about how Microsoft customer service behave for this tribble bug in surface laptop studio charging. I really regrateful regarding my decision to switch to surface.

Microsoft, how long we should complain about this problem in surface laptop studio to finally you guys may solve it !!!!

    Hi Jerry,

Now I got this issue again (05/11/2022) - and I see that Windows 11 shows the battery is "chargeing" down in the taskbar, but in Intel Control Center its "discharging"!

Had to go total dead (0%) (USB-C charger does not work to "trigger" it here for me) - here when my new Surface Laptop Studio is discharging:

Danish Windows lang - translate the text.

    Battery report:

Here when it had discharged total:

After this is shows up as "charging" in both Intel Control Center (not like before) AND Windows 11 (like before)!

Battery report now AFTER got down to 0 % battery when was in your own Surface Dock 2 to the Surface Laptop Stoduio (the charger whit the Laptop does NOT make any changes when I put that in! My Surface Dock was replaced by Microsoft and it was NOT that! See order 1044055781 the the replacement!

Please checkout my comment here 10/13/2022 4:03:40 PM!

Microsoft - fix this issue or we wont our money back, as this laptop has this issues for a lot of customers (and replaced devices has THE SAME BUG - so it is a widespread problem!)

Let us get an update, or i contact support again!
