Surface Laptop Studio will not charge occasionally / depletes battery at alarming rate.

Every once in awhile my Surface Laptop Studio will refuse to charge - or atleast it says it's charging but clearly isn't. The battery then depletes at a rate of almost 1% every minute until in shuts off at 0%. Then I have to repeatedly restart it, plug in charging cable, for almost an hour to get it to start charging again. This isn't a charger issue. This is possibly some odd software issue.

Why Microsoft wants be to make a post instead of talking to an employee is beyond me.

Thank you for your patience and feedback as we worked on this. A fix is now available through Windows Update. After installing the update, please restart (not Shutdown) your Surface Laptop Studio. For more information about updates for your Surface available through Windows Update see Download drivers and firmware for your Surface

For more details about Surface Laptop Update History, please see Surface Laptop Studio Update History.

If the issue continues to occur, here is a workaround that has helped others start charging again:

  1. Connect your Surface power supply and make sure the power connector light is on.
  2. Save all your work and shutdown your Surface.
  3. Once shutdown, press and hold down the power button, you will see the Windows logo screen flash and then turn off, continue to hold down the power button (about 20 seconds) until you see the Windows logo screen flash again and then release the power button.

I've come across this issue about 4 times now, and it's happening now as I am waiting for a flight at the airport. The only remedy I have found to truly work is just accepting the fact that the battery will fully deplete and I will miss hours of productivity because of a driver issue that the Microsoft team likes to continuously blame on faulty hardware.

I don't want to reinstall windows again, the first 4 times didn't work, and the pattern of this issue is always the same. I spent over 3 grand on this, and my laptop still shiv's itself in the drivers every few months leaving me helplessly trying to send an email before the battery fully depletes as I comically keep it plugged in thinking that it will magically work.

The issue appears to have resolved before that. My last issue was 10/17/2022. This was within a week after the firmware update and right before a software update. I have no idea which versions. However, since that last software update I haven’t had charging issues. Because I had charging issues about every week that required a hard reboot, I strongly suspect the 11/18 patch wasn’t the one that fixed things unless I somehow got it early because that would have been a month out from the last issue. I unfortunately didn’t document patch types or dates, only when the charging issues showed up.

I left dell due to a laptop that overheated when any small amount of processing power was required, so I’m not convinced that will end well either. It looked like some class action lawsuits were attempting to get started over the issue.

Have you done all the updates? My issue appears to be fixed(?) As it hasn’t shown up since a crash right after a firmware update on 10/17. Immediately after the post firmware happened there was also a software update. I’m unsure if the software or firmware are related to my issue going away, but since 10/17 I’ve had no issues. I went from about every weekish to nothing yet.

I agree 100%. A supervisor at Microsoft agreed to give me a full refund for this huge inconvenience and I'm waiting for that now. I highly suggest reaching out to support and insisting on talking to a supervisor. My escalation through the BBB didn't accomplish anything.

Now I've ordered a new Lenovo computer and I will never support Microsoft again. What a horrible experience for months trying to get help here.
