Surface Laptop Studio will not charge occasionally / depletes battery at alarming rate.

Every once in awhile my Surface Laptop Studio will refuse to charge - or atleast it says it's charging but clearly isn't. The battery then depletes at a rate of almost 1% every minute until in shuts off at 0%. Then I have to repeatedly restart it, plug in charging cable, for almost an hour to get it to start charging again. This isn't a charger issue. This is possibly some odd software issue.

Why Microsoft wants be to make a post instead of talking to an employee is beyond me.

Marking as Answered to raise visibility - Updated July 17, 2023

Thank you for your patience and feedback as we worked on this. A fix is now available through Windows Update. After installing the update, please restart (not Shutdown) your Surface Laptop Studio. For more information about updates for your Surface available through Windows Update see Download drivers and firmware for your Surface

For more details about Surface Laptop Update History, please see Surface Laptop Studio Update History.

If the issue continues to occur, here is a workaround that has helped others start charging again:

  1. Connect your Surface power supply and make sure the power connector light is on.
  2. Save all your work and shutdown your Surface.
  3. Once shutdown, press and hold down the power button, you will see the Windows logo screen flash and then turn off, continue to hold down the power button (about 20 seconds) until you see the Windows logo screen flash again and then release the power button.

    Hi everyone,

I've submitted a issue report, referring to this community forum discussion.

For what it's worth: I'll post the link to this issue report here, so it can be upvoted.

Same story here. SLS i7, 512, 2tb. From start facing these issues. Nothing helps. Forced restart and 10 minute wait will do the trick. Super professional when you are presenting stuff. Nice 3k+ laptop…

    Come one Microsoft!! Please help

This is the best reply on this thread, thank you for the detailed contribution!

    My experience has been exactly as Rood_284 describes;

    • Similar specs (i7, 512gb SSD, 32gb RAM, graphics card)
    • The issue happens approximately once per month
    • Driver reinstall does not work
    • Tried w/ two different official microsoft chargers; same results w/ each
    • Tried reorienting the connector w/ both; same results
    • Hard shutdown (10-second button press) does indeed resolve until it occurs again a few weeks later

Microsoft, can we please get a response on this?

Now that I've come to think of it... Are there some variables that we can check?

    1. I have chargers of varying wattage: 102W and 127W. Both are compatible, but might this throw drivers of the laptop off-guard?
    2. Does the mixed use of chargers with differing wattage impose issues that the charger itself tries to mitigate? I don't know, but maybe the chargers have some smart components in it, which might cause the "charging but not charging" issue?

Maybe there still is something else going on, but this is what I so far can come up with in my personal situation. Of course, checking variables like this takes time (considering this issue happens once a month or so). I think that I can at least limit my usage to exclusively the 102W charger, see if that helps us clear up the mystery a bit. At least for variable 1 that I can identify.

As a side note: I have a feeling that this "hard shutdown" thing is effectively the same as letting the laptop die at 0%. In both cases, the laptop goes to a full stop, maybe resetting any driver related to power management? Seems to be a vague hint towards a (non-volatile) issue with power management. I say "non-volatile" because the health of my battery is not affected, as it seems.

My Surface Studio Laptop is doing this too, less than 6 months old.

Not of the prescribed fixes work. Only forced shutdown and wait 10mins or so seems to make it start charging again.

Also think it might be doing it with USBC charging too but sent back the charger thinking it was that at fault so unable to test until I get a new one and it does it again.

Come on MS sort this out!
