Ugh, I have this issue too and considering it seems to be ongoing, I'm knocking my amazon review of the laptop to one star. It is now august 31 2022 and it appears the issue is still ongoing. I purchased about 15 days ago, so I need to wipe my laptop to return it. Too bad, despite Microsoft being extremely misleading about battery life, the machine was exactly what I was looking for. (actually I have time, so I may wait to see if the heating was the issue and decided in the next ten days based on machine performance). Actually, I just hit 33 days since my amazon order. Frack.
I just got things to work, thanks for recommending the hard reboot. I also wonder if it was a fan issue causing a different issue or if I have two different issues.
My story:
The Fix for me (temporary? who knows)
First, what got things charging for me. I held the power button down until the machine shut off. Doing this three times I got a charging signal on the battery icon. The battery was at 22%.
The issues
I had three issues at once. The fans, that had been working amazing, didn't seem to kick on. My machine felt "hot" running, like when using a high end game, (but the fans would run then). While looking for some way to turn my fans on so my machine could run cool, I noticed the machine was not charging. The fans may have not been working for a while. I'm going to test on a game that didn't require a ton of power, but things got warm. Maybe there's a connection?
I tested a game that I had been playing the past few days and had noticed it getting warm. Fans are now coming on and the machine the casing is much cooler. I hadn't really thought about it much because kingmaker (pathfinder) would get the machine just as warm with the fans going full blast, so maybe it's a heat protection feature and the reboot is required to reset the fans? So, the machine has been running without fans for the past few days. When it started getting painful hot, I started looking for manual fan control and noted the lack of charging.
I will also note that when I rebooted and got the charge back the bottom right of the casing under my right hand palm had a sudden burst of heat and the fans came on. That was weird and what made me take note that the fans should have been on.
Also of note, windows facial recognition seemed to have some issues. it was a little dark, but its been working with no issues for a while. So a different issue? Coincidence and bad timing with poor lighting/angle? I did not get a "to get this to work better" notice, that I would usually get when facial fails. It just went straight to the pin.
So, that's been my adventure today. I really wish Microsoft could get their devices to work. My first experience with MS product was the MS surface, which had a keyboard that never worked. Microsoft is 0-2 with me so far. (well, their x-boxes seem to work.... so maybe 2-2 if you count those.)
Machine type and date
Surface laptop studio, purchased about 7/15/2022 from amazon. (not looking up exact date, but I have less than 15 days of reviews as I've been updating). I7, 16 ram, 500 gig.
Recommendation:
People:
Make note if fans are working or not and if laptop is getting hot or if machine is cool and not charging.
Make note if facial recognition software also starts bugging (it seemed to with mine)
If I'm the only one experiencing those issues, then maybe it's unrelated. Logically, it makes sense to have a safety feature with heat, although i'd expect notification too.
Microsoft:
Kindly review why fans might stop working due to software, because a hard reboot got them working.
Kindly look into whether the charging issue is a heat/safety feature.
Communicate with your consumers about **** is going on with the machine. Maybe whether it's being looked at. Radio silence is annoying. If I had the issues and you were taking action as opposed to ignoring this thread (I say based on the lack of MS responses or updates) then I wouldn't be giving you a one star for this product.
Also, kindly don't mislead with advertising about battery life. I don't get 8 hours with standard browsing, and gaming use is 30-40 minutes. My previous laptop was a high performing laptop and got a couple of hours. ****.
I don't know if anyone who can do anything about anything will get this, but those are my thoughts.
