Surface Laptop Studio will not charge occasionally / depletes battery at alarming rate.

Every once in awhile my Surface Laptop Studio will refuse to charge - or atleast it says it's charging but clearly isn't. The battery then depletes at a rate of almost 1% every minute until in shuts off at 0%. Then I have to repeatedly restart it, plug in charging cable, for almost an hour to get it to start charging again. This isn't a charger issue. This is possibly some odd software issue.

Why Microsoft wants be to make a post instead of talking to an employee is beyond me.

Marking as Answered to raise visibility - Updated July 17, 2023

Thank you for your patience and feedback as we worked on this. A fix is now available through Windows Update. After installing the update, please restart (not Shutdown) your Surface Laptop Studio. For more information about updates for your Surface available through Windows Update see Download drivers and firmware for your Surface

For more details about Surface Laptop Update History, please see Surface Laptop Studio Update History.

If the issue continues to occur, here is a workaround that has helped others start charging again:

  1. Connect your Surface power supply and make sure the power connector light is on.
  2. Save all your work and shutdown your Surface.
  3. Once shutdown, press and hold down the power button, you will see the Windows logo screen flash and then turn off, continue to hold down the power button (about 20 seconds) until you see the Windows logo screen flash again and then release the power button.

    Just a quick update.

Still having this problem when charging with the OEM 120W charger however it seems that USBC charging works fine.

I use a 100w USBC PD charger to charge my SLS when working remotely in my motorhome but normally use the OEM 120w at home. Yesterday it stopped charging so I took it out to the motorhome and plugged in the USBC PD charger and it started charging again.

Plugging in the USBC charger seems to reset the issue as once it starts to charge I could switch back to the OEM charger.

Maybe this narrows down the issue to the driver/software/coding for the MS charger socket?

This is the best reply on this thread, thank you for the detailed contribution!

My experience has been exactly as Rood_284 describes; - Similar specs (i7, 512gb SSD, 32gb RAM, graphics card)- The issue happens approximately once per month- Driver reinstall does not work- Tried w/ two different official microsoft chargers; same results w/ each- Tried reorienting the connector w/ both; same results- Hard shutdown (10-second button press) does indeed resolve until it occurs again a few weeks laterMicrosoft, can we please get a response on this?

Now that I've come to think of it... Are there some variables that we can check?

    1. I have chargers of varying wattage: 102W and 127W. Both are compatible, but might this throw drivers of the laptop off-guard?
    2. Does the mixed use of chargers with differing wattage impose issues that the charger itself tries to mitigate? I don't know, but maybe the chargers have some smart components in it, which might cause the "charging but not charging" issue?

Maybe there still is something else going on, but this is what I so far can come up with in my personal situation. Of course, checking variables like this takes time (considering this issue happens once a month or so). I think that I can at least limit my usage to exclusively the 102W charger, see if that helps us clear up the mystery a bit. At least for variable 1 that I can identify.

As a side note: I have a feeling that this "hard shutdown" thing is effectively the same as letting the laptop die at 0%. In both cases, the laptop goes to a full stop, maybe resetting any driver related to power management? Seems to be a vague hint towards a (non-volatile) issue with power management. I say "non-volatile" because the health of my battery is not affected, as it seems.

After exclusively using the 102W charger that shipped with the laptop for some time now, one of my Surface Laptop Studios once again depleted the battery while the charger is connected. Hard reboot makes the laptop charge up again.

This leads me to believe it's not related to using different chargers with differing wattages.

Found another trick that kinda is a temporary solution to this problem. After restarting and once the laptop starts to actually charge I turned on smart charging(i.e. maintains the battery charge up to 80%). So, for the past two days, I haven't faced the issue. It's convenient for me coz most of the days I'm at my desk working at home & not outside. Maybe, when I go outside I'll have to switch off smart charging so it charges to 100%.

Can confirm that my brand new SLS which I have been using for only about a week is having this exact same issue. Not what I wanted when I spent $4000 on a new machine DAYS before school starts. As others have said, the only fix I found to work was holding the power button down until the laptop shuts down and turns on again (and this is only temporary). This is the first time I have tried this fix so I do not know how long it will last. Given all of the other testimonies I have read, it seems very clear to me that this is a software issue. They better be working on a fix for this immediately. What an embarrassing joke this is for MS.
