Surface Laptop Studio will not charge occasionally / depletes battery at alarming rate.

Every once in awhile my Surface Laptop Studio will refuse to charge - or atleast it says it's charging but clearly isn't. The battery then depletes at a rate of almost 1% every minute until in shuts off at 0%. Then I have to repeatedly restart it, plug in charging cable, for almost an hour to get it to start charging again. This isn't a charger issue. This is possibly some odd software issue.

Why Microsoft wants be to make a post instead of talking to an employee is beyond me.

Marking as Answered to raise visibility - Updated July 17, 2023

Thank you for your patience and feedback as we worked on this. A fix is now available through Windows Update. After installing the update, please restart (not Shutdown) your Surface Laptop Studio. For more information about updates for your Surface available through Windows Update see Download drivers and firmware for your Surface

For more details about Surface Laptop Update History, please see Surface Laptop Studio Update History.

If the issue continues to occur, here is a workaround that has helped others start charging again:

  1. Connect your Surface power supply and make sure the power connector light is on.
  2. Save all your work and shutdown your Surface.
  3. Once shutdown, press and hold down the power button, you will see the Windows logo screen flash and then turn off, continue to hold down the power button (about 20 seconds) until you see the Windows logo screen flash again and then release the power button.

What a joke that this has not been resolved yet. Extremely bad for MS.

After a number of MS devices, my ultimate answer has been: moving back to Dell.

    Strongly recommend this to others.

Appreciate that an issue may occur, but the way that this has (not) been handled for so many customers who paid a lot of money, is embarrasing for any company.

    Goodbye Microsoft!

And what is your status on the new replaced device?

I got the "same" offer regarding Microsoft should sent a replacement - but I had got this issues 2-3 time "only".

But not tryed yes - as the "device" works for now - but is there some updates from replaced devices?

    Hi aludon,

that is interesting to hear. What updates did you initiate? Was it the firmware update v1.0 from November 18 2022 (.msi file from microsoft drivers hub)?

I’d love to see some follow ups from those that have had replacements. I’ve been posting updates on my own experiences and I’d love to know of the replacements are working for people. We only hear from those who the replacement didn’t help.

For myself, there was a firmware update that didn’t seem to fix my issue immediately, but another software update followed and my problem has been gone almost two months now. Before that I was crashing every three days up to a week. I had changed my usage of my laptop, so I switched back to my old usage style and the crashing still isn’t happening.

My issues were the power cord connecting and no charging. The power cord light wouldn’t come on and the charging indicator on the laptop correctly showed no charging. Reading this thread, people seem to have different but similar issues so I wanted to be specific on my issues.
