Surface Laptop Studio will not charge occasionally / depletes battery at alarming rate.

Every once in awhile my Surface Laptop Studio will refuse to charge - or atleast it says it's charging but clearly isn't. The battery then depletes at a rate of almost 1% every minute until in shuts off at 0%. Then I have to repeatedly restart it, plug in charging cable, for almost an hour to get it to start charging again. This isn't a charger issue. This is possibly some odd software issue.

Why Microsoft wants be to make a post instead of talking to an employee is beyond me.

Marking as Answered to raise visibility - Updated July 17, 2023

Thank you for your patience and feedback as we worked on this. A fix is now available through Windows Update. After installing the update, please restart (not Shutdown) your Surface Laptop Studio. For more information about updates for your Surface available through Windows Update see Download drivers and firmware for your Surface

For more details about Surface Laptop Update History, please see Surface Laptop Studio Update History.

If the issue continues to occur, here is a workaround that has helped others start charging again:

  1. Connect your Surface power supply and make sure the power connector light is on.
  2. Save all your work and shutdown your Surface.
  3. Once shutdown, press and hold down the power button, you will see the Windows logo screen flash and then turn off, continue to hold down the power button (about 20 seconds) until you see the Windows logo screen flash again and then release the power button.

My laptop is experiencing the issue now, so I figured this was the perfect time to apply the update. After applying the update and rebooting my laptop, nothing changed. My battery is still draining even though it is plugged in.

At this point, I am seriously considering exploring what legal options are available to force Microsoft to fix this device or refund me my total purchase price.

Looks like there is a new Surface Firmware update today. Has anyone felt any difference or feel it's been resolved? I just updated mine, must wait and see. I am at a point where I want to give this back and get a Razer Blade 14 AMD version even though I won't get a stylus and a touch screen. I want to cry for deciding and buying this and still paying the monthly payments. I feel like Apple would be saint when compared to Microsoft now. For god sake Microsoft you're an older software company!!! Why are you ignorant like some dumb amateur company. You give your full performance for the product presentations alone. Mr. Panos! for all the talk of "customer centric" and the touching story of the "Surface" brand name, is this how you run this Surface division? I was so happy for bloody being able to buy this product now. Fix it or return it! Maybe we'll have to sue Microsoft for their attitude. Goddammit! Feel irritated for being Microsoft fan for my entire life.

    Same story for me.

Microsoft sent me a refurbished (so-called checked by engineer) one and replace my faulty one. The new device also has this stop-charging problem even more frequently!!! and when I call them, customer service wanted to send me another refurbished one, and I bet you the third one also will have this stop charging problem as well. I don't know when this vicious cycle will be stopped.

Microsoft please answer, your top laptop had such a terrible bug and you guys didn't find out how to solve it!!! really frustrating !!!
