Surface Laptop Studio will not charge occasionally / depletes battery at alarming rate.

Every once in awhile my Surface Laptop Studio will refuse to charge - or atleast it says it's charging but clearly isn't. The battery then depletes at a rate of almost 1% every minute until in shuts off at 0%. Then I have to repeatedly restart it, plug in charging cable, for almost an hour to get it to start charging again. This isn't a charger issue. This is possibly some odd software issue.

Why Microsoft wants be to make a post instead of talking to an employee is beyond me.

Marking as Answered to raise visibility - Updated July 17, 2023

Thank you for your patience and feedback as we worked on this. A fix is now available through Windows Update. After installing the update, please restart (not Shutdown) your Surface Laptop Studio. For more information about updates for your Surface available through Windows Update see Download drivers and firmware for your Surface

For more details about Surface Laptop Update History, please see Surface Laptop Studio Update History.

If the issue continues to occur, here is a workaround that has helped others start charging again:

  1. Connect your Surface power supply and make sure the power connector light is on.
  2. Save all your work and shutdown your Surface.
  3. Once shutdown, press and hold down the power button, you will see the Windows logo screen flash and then turn off, continue to hold down the power button (about 20 seconds) until you see the Windows logo screen flash again and then release the power button.

I hope the update Microsoft made to your laptop solves your problem. My laptop has been able to pull updates successfully but still has the issue. The battery drain issue on my laptop takes a month or more to show up, but once it does, it becomes a regular problem.

During my current battery drain issue, I researched how to solve a battery issue on a Surface-based laptop and found a few good ideas. One of the ideas was to remove the battery device from the Device Manager. To complete this, I went into the device manager and removed the "Surface Battery" driver under the "Batteries" tree item. Once I removed the Surface Battery device and rebooted my laptop the charging problem disappeared.

I have been able to successfully change my laptop after dropping below 20% on multiple occasions after having had failures on the past several attempts. I will keep allowing the battery to fully charge and then drain below 20% to see if this solution will provide a temporary solution to the issue.

I am interested in seeing if removing the battery driver when the problem occurs will allow the battery to charge successfully without reaching 0%.

    I HAVE FOUND THE SOLUTION!!!

Ok, so it is definitely a software/firmware issue. I spent 3 hours working on this on Friday, first I had support call me 3 times but each time after 15 minutes the call dropped me, at which point it said "you've reached the limit for support callbacks today" (?!). So I switched to support chat, and eventually the guy called me instead of text chat. He said I had to reach out to 'business support' instead because I'm using my laptop for work purposes. I started to get really angry and said this is ridiculous, I purchased my laptop with my personal microsoft account and not through the business website, and that he was just passing me over to avoid dealing with the issue himself. So I insisted that he transfer me to a supervisor instead. He didn't want to, and said the supervisor wouldn't be able to help me, but I insisted. He said it could take 48 hours for a supervisor, and just before we were ending the call, voila, his supervisor came to his desk and took over our call.

The supervisor was incredibly helpful and understanding, and she asked me to open Quick Assist on my computer so she could access it remotely. As soon as she entered my computer she went to "Device Manager", and next to "Surface UEFI" there was an explanation mark in a triangle. This was apparently preventing full windows updates from being possible, so she had to manually download something to my computer (I'm sorry, I don't know what it was..) and THEN I was able to update windows, and THEN the explanation mark symbol was gone... it seems to be working normally now, I've been testing the battery all weekend. Plugging it in at random percentages to see if I could replicate what had been happening and I really think it's fixed now.

She offered me a free surface slim pen for the inconvenience. So guys... this is proof that it's a problem from Microsoft and NOT the hardware of your computer. Proof that they can fix the issue... How frustrating to have multiple support people try to get me to wipe my whole device and re-install windows etc.. what a waste of time that would have been!!

I hope this helps you all and that you can find a way to fix this too, I don't think I could have fixed it myself without her downloading that thing to my computer that allowed me to finally update Windows. (Maybe this newest windows update has the fix in it and that's why it's working now?)

I'm still probably not going to buy Microsoft again after this experience, very disappointed with the way support has been handling this.
