Surface Laptop Studio will not charge occasionally / depletes battery at alarming rate.

Every once in awhile my Surface Laptop Studio will refuse to charge - or atleast it says it's charging but clearly isn't. The battery then depletes at a rate of almost 1% every minute until in shuts off at 0%. Then I have to repeatedly restart it, plug in charging cable, for almost an hour to get it to start charging again. This isn't a charger issue. This is possibly some odd software issue.

Why Microsoft wants be to make a post instead of talking to an employee is beyond me.

Marking as Answered to raise visibility - Updated July 17, 2023

Thank you for your patience and feedback as we worked on this. A fix is now available through Windows Update. After installing the update, please restart (not Shutdown) your Surface Laptop Studio. For more information about updates for your Surface available through Windows Update see Download drivers and firmware for your Surface

For more details about Surface Laptop Update History, please see Surface Laptop Studio Update History.

If the issue continues to occur, here is a workaround that has helped others start charging again:

  1. Connect your Surface power supply and make sure the power connector light is on.
  2. Save all your work and shutdown your Surface.
  3. Once shutdown, press and hold down the power button, you will see the Windows logo screen flash and then turn off, continue to hold down the power button (about 20 seconds) until you see the Windows logo screen flash again and then release the power button.

    Hi John,

I do not see a heart icon on the battery.

I have tried the USB recovery and unfortunately, the issue still persists.

I have yet to try it with a different Microsoft Surface power cord as it's a bit of a hassle to buy one at the moment, however I will try.

From what i've read online this isn't an issue with the cord but the laptop itself unfortunatly.

Thanks you again for the replies.

    Hi Jerry,

This is becoming increasingly frustrating and infuriating. There are several of us and probably many more who CANNOT USE OUR LAPTOPS PROPERLY!! This battery draining issue is happening almost daily for me, I'm an ecommerce business owner and after investing $2500 into this laptop in June, it is negatively affecting my business!!! I always think I'm good, it's plugged in, it shows charging.. but then in the middle of something important the thing gets a warning to charge and shuts down. After it turns off I have to push the power button SEVERAL times in order to get it to turn back on, and most recently today it showed a black screen that said 'repairing C drive' after I held the power button down and it finally turned on again ... What is going on?!

Offering a refurbished laptop that will probably do the same thing again is not a solution!! Also I don't have a second computer and I absolutely cannot go 2 weeks without a computer. I can't even go 24 hours without using my computer. Microsoft must fix this issue asap! I'm sure most of us will never buy Microsoft again after having an issue like this, especially after seeing how you are not fixing the issue or offering a suitable solution. This is your chance to retain your customers. I've been buying the surface pro since the early days and have been a loyal customer since, but this is absurd guys. Are you working on a fix? Can we all complain to our credit card companies about receiving faulty products and file chargebacks or something?

Thanks, as we are a lot there have this issues, and we had tried a lot (IT guy here to) and lots of dialogue with Microsoft Support and here there is no fixes... So sad!

First time I had a device i cant charge so i can use it !!!!!! :(

Joanna (from the Danish Microsoft Surface Support) had send to me in my case 1044621673 it should/may be an software bug somewhere.

It was weird, and an device for so much need to work (and changed) we i/we all can use it to do your work!

She had send this tread back in Microsoft to, for more looking into this issues. It cant be right!!

Hi, they sent me a refurbished surface laptop studio and I have a similar stop-charging problem with a new device as well.

They wanted to send me a second refurbished one!
