Where is the media player?

There's no Windows Media Player in Windows RT.

If you have the iPod 5, download the Onedrive app for it from the App Store.  You can copy your files that way and then download them to the RT via Onedrive.

I understand that you are having trouble using/playing non-MP4 videos on your RT device.

From your description, you have two questions: 

1 You want to embed non-MP4 videos in Power Point, correct?

   I recommend you post this question on Our Office Power Point Forum.

   You will be getting more professional support regarding Power Point on Power Point Forum.

2 You want to play non-MP4 videos that are in other formats, correct? 

   There are many media player apps available in Windows Store for your choosing.

   You can type the video file format in the search box, for example divx, avi etc.

   You can also read the app reviews to decide which one you prefer.

The Store which is the online repository (tile on the START screen) is what I mean.

If you can't find it, it is not available for the ARM tablets.

VLC is unknown for the date of release.  The Metro UI version for the regular x86 computers is already in the Store but not for the ARM tablets.

When it is released, it has the built in codecs to support almost all formats of media to include DivX as well.  It also has an open source decoder for DVD movie playback as well.  There will be some formats it won't such as iTunes Movies and also Xbox Live Video movies which are encrypted.  You already have the capability of playing Xbox Live Video and iTunes itself will never be available for RT tablets (Apple won't have anything to do with it).

You will have to wait and spot check the Store for "VLC" and if it becomes available for the ARM tablets, it will appear in the Store when you browse it with an RT tablet.

You can also go to http://www.videolan.org for any news regarding VLC.  It is an open source project and get no support from Microsoft in developing it.  BUT, it is the only media player with that capability.  There is another called MPlayer but I don't think there is any effort to develop it for Metro UI though.  It uses the same codec pack as VLC (in fact, both outfits work together on projects).

I can play any videos or music files I've put in my surface. There are loads of different music and video players in the store if you don't like the built in ones. Regarding browsers... its up to other companies to create them, not Microsoft.

if the media is on a non windows indexable external NAS which is what happens

when you connect a USB drive to a router, then W8 cannot index it. If you turn

on the Server Service on the Surface and share a folder on the Surface using

password protected sharing, you ay be able to browse the external drive and play

an individual asset.

You should be able to use the (Xbox) music app for this, roughly as follows...

Start the app

Swipe up from bottom of screen to bring up the App bar

Tap on Open (brings up File Picker UI)

Tap on "Go up" repeatedly until you see "Computer" in the listed options

Tap on Computer... this should show, among others, your router.

Tap on the router icon and navigate to what you wish to play. Select songs and "open" to play.

There may be other apps in the store that can do this.

P.S. this assumes that the WiFi connection is set up to allow sharing and discovery.

when I try to open .mod .moi files in Windows MEdia Player using my Surface RT I get an error message saying format not supported. I've tried to download some file comversion software but get a message saying these the Apps are not supported. Can anyone advise how I can play these files on my Surface RT.

Hello Brendan,

Windows Media Player doesn't work at all on the Surface RT. You cannot install 3rd party software. You should open the Store app, there you will find many different apps for playing various types of media files. To search in Store, when it is open sweep in slightly from the right side to open the Charms, select Search, whatever you type in the Search will be searched for in the Store.

Search for an app called 'PressPlay Video' in the Windows Store. Its free, highly rated, and plays MKV and FLV videos.

I cannot find a player that can play files from locations other than the music library. Xbox music player does not work very well with mp3 files that have been imported into the music library. Also I have found that certain apps are not available depending on the region you are located in. If anyone knows of a media player that can play files from locations other than the music library and is available in Canada I would appreciate the information.

There is no Windows Media Player in Surface RT.

To play .mod video file you need video converter for Surface RT.

Is there a way to check the Windows store for only Windows RT apps without using a Windows RT device?  

Preferably an OS independent method. 

Without MKV support I don't think its even worth the time to turn my Surface RT on.    (I bought it to be a mobile entertainment device) 

When I do searches with Windows 8, PowerDVD mobile shows up with MKV support, but it does NOT have an RT version.  So that's another waste of time.  

If i don't get MKV and torrent support equivalent too or better than what I currently get on Android devices then I can't recommend Windows RT to anybody.   

FYI currently VPLayer and BSPlayer on Android can both play MKV files with H264 hi-def video content and DTS audio.  They do it for less than $5 each.  And there are several free torrent clients already.

There aren't currently any apps in the store that can play those file formats, but that doesn't mean there won't be.

Sorry for the delayed response. If the file is DRM protected, then it will not work on the Surface, or in any other player. You can check into the Windows Store to see if and when a iTunes app is available and then it may be able to play.

All USB DVB tuners require drivers and applications in order to operate. As these cannot be installed unless provided via the store and have to be coded for the ARM processor none will work.

It remains to be seen if one of the manufacturers considers the Surface a big enough market to make a version to work on it.

I play music from my primary PC by having Surface join my home network (HomeGroup).

If you've already have a homegroup set up, go to Settings, Change PC Settings, then scroll down to Homegroup and enter your homegroup password (on your Surface).

My Music library is shared on my primary PC and it shows up in the Xbox Music app on my Surface - under My Music.

Since disc space is limited - this option works well for me (I have the 32 GB model and 100 GB of music).

The Music app supports streaming from our Xbox service as wells as playing music from your device or a connected storage device. Unfortunately it does not support streaming from a media server.
