Surface 4 Pro screen bulging at lower left edge and separated from the frame

I have a Surface 4 Pro that I purchased in March 2016. Over the last few days, I was seeing a considerable color bleed on lower left edge of the screen. Then I stared noticing that that type cover does not seem to close flat against the screen. On closer inspection, I found that the screen is bulging (curving out) on the lower left side and the screen edge has separated from the frame, exposing a gap, Some of the circuitry inside seems to be pushing out as well from what I can see through the gap, indicating something inside is exerting an outward pressure. I pushed the screen back in and with a little pressure it got flattened. However, after a few minutes use, the screen bulged out again. There is no physical damage to the screen, the bezel or the device in general, no cracks or scratches.

What is causing this and what is a possible solution?

Thanks,

Deepak

    Hi everyone,

This is a know issue with Microsoft Surface products. There needs to be an official recall, there are many accounts of these devices even catching on fire.

Please join the FB group called,

Microsoft Surface Book Problems With Screen Discoloration and Bulging

We all have the same story: Our laptops are out of warranty, please pay $599+ to have it fixed. No warning either of how dangerous this can be for us.

Here are more sources that prove this is a known defect (not to mention the many posts on this forum):

    1. Business purchased 15 Surface products, 3 of them had the screen bulging issue. From this small user group, this could mean that 20 out of 100 Surface products are experiencing this issue: https://www.ifixit.com/News/32723/got-a-surface-book-or-surface-pro-4-watch-out-for-screen-bulging-batteries
    2. Because of the "warranty", to add insult to injury a lot of us are unable to get it repaired free of charge https://mspoweruser.com/surface-book-owners-are-reporting-swollen-batteries/

Unfortunate instances of them catching fire because of the defect:

I called about mine. They said it was purchased in May 2016, but I swear it wasn't that long ago. In any case, they stated that I have to pay $450 plus tax to get a replacement of the exact same thing. So, basically, I buy a 4 year old Surface Pro 4 for $450...Um, not a good deal. This is a known issue and should be replaced under a recall. They know this is an issue. Sad that they aren't taking care of their customers. We have purchased several of these and talked many people into buying them as well. Now I feel let down. Any other ideas? I spoke to a manager as well.

    Dear Microsoft,

I don't need to know how many thousand people have the same problem - I want to know what solution you are offering.

All I can say is don't hold your breath .... the dozens of negative feedback examples from people on here shows they don't care because they know we who have bothered to complain about the issue are but the tip of a very large and expensive iceberg.  Like many others I have switched to a more reliant product and will NOT switch back.  Sadly.  But you have to go with products that work and companies that at least seem to care when their product fails.  No one expects a forever product, but downstream design defects are not acceptable and MS knows that and is very quiet.  All you people paying the $400 (or equivalent) for a refurbished model should be ashamed - safe in the knowledge that your 90 days warranty (or whatever crappy deal they offered you) will expire long before the battery dies again.

It would be nice to think that during this Covid19 lockdown, the boffins in MS have been working away on a solution and have involved the Customer Service/Help Desk people so that we all get contacted with a workable solution.  Oh sorry. dozed off into a daydream there (he said as another flock of pigs flew overhead).

    Yeah Right!!

We'll still be waiting in 2022 (or probably longer) ..... sound of laughter way in the distance coming from Redmond.

I have the same problem caused by expanding battery. Feel bad I have to pay 810$ to get a replacement as I bought for more than 3 years. I Will not buy MS products anymore! Totally disappointed.

My sp4 screen has separated by 1/3", likely from a swollen battery. if it wasnt for the ms glass protector the screen probably would have cracked.

At the local ms store (completely void of customers, unlikethe nearby Apple store which was packed), i was told its a few m out of warranty, but per an advisory, am offered a refurbished sp5 for $500.

I guess they dont mind the bad pr and have to be sued to do anything more.  How ridiculous.

Btw the fingerprint cover rarely works and i had to exchange the first one bc it stopped working.

No Longer a ms fan. No wonder their store was empty.
