Surface 4 Pro screen bulging at lower left edge and separated from the frame

I have a Surface 4 Pro that I purchased in March 2016. Over the last few days, I was seeing a considerable color bleed on lower left edge of the screen. Then I stared noticing that that type cover does not seem to close flat against the screen. On closer inspection, I found that the screen is bulging (curving out) on the lower left side and the screen edge has separated from the frame, exposing a gap, Some of the circuitry inside seems to be pushing out as well from what I can see through the gap, indicating something inside is exerting an outward pressure. I pushed the screen back in and with a little pressure it got flattened. However, after a few minutes use, the screen bulged out again. There is no physical damage to the screen, the bezel or the device in general, no cracks or scratches.

What is causing this and what is a possible solution?

Thanks,

Deepak

I suspect you're dead right in that it may indeed be exacerbated by the closed cover but even if that is an issue the charging system must also be at fault - which in the end boils down to the simple fact that MS have made thousands of these machines with a built in defect that renders them useless and, worst of all, potentially dangerous AND have turned a blind eye to it throughout.  That's some big brand cochones right there, right in our faces.

Been an MS fan for decades now and never felt so let down by a brand that I loved.

It's also hard to understand why a techo journalist hasn't picked this up and splashed it all over the press or is my cynical mind right in thinking they've all been bought off..??

I also struggle with those in this forum who have succumbed to the "offer" and had a refurb model for 400/500 dollars pounds or euros/whatever.  I would be forever wondering how long this "refurb" model would last before the same s**t happened to me again.

Can't quite bring myself to go across to the dark side and buy an Apple product but at least I have heard how good their Customer Service is.  Bet they wouldn't let a forum like this rack up 22 pages (and growing) of people ALL complaining about one aspect of their products without doing something about it urgently; if only MS, if only......

Let me add another entry to get this list over the hump to 22 pages.

My SP4 screen just bulged out this week.  My dear God, 21 pages of complaints...  I, for one, wouldn't spend another $400-600 for a replacement worrying it might **** out again.  I have always loved the SPs, got 4 total in my household (2x SP3s & 2x SP4s).  I am so sad that this SP4 could explode unexpectedly....  better do daily backup now instead of weekly.

So, for the folks out there reading, instead of waiting for a class action happening on this safety issue, anyway we can unite and get one going?

    @brad

I just used the support.microsoft.com link to contact support about the bulging screen. The agent came on and asked for information, then had me video the bulging with the serial number included. I uploaded the video, and the rest is done. They are sending out a replacement for my SP4. It's been 5 years of life...

Did they replace it free of charge or did you have to pay for it? I have 2 computers that are now bulging.

    I don’t believe it.

If it were true ms would be refunding all of us who paid for a replacement.

    nope.

Me to law firm that did surface 3 battery:

Microsoft Surface Pro 3, 4 and laptop can have swelling battery resulting in an open case, and rendering it very unsafe to use, even if it can be, bc of high fire and explosion potential. Frequently this is preceded by severe screen flicker. Because my Surface Pro 4,  brought 2016 is a few months out of any warranty, Microsoft's remedy is to offer me a $600 upgrade to a refurbished model 5 (same is available on Amazon for $350).  Online, some have reported no question asked replacement. Google "surface pro 3 4  screen battery" for many other reports. Also see several news articles. One suggested they rushed it out. Please advise.

    Ans:

Thank you for your email. Our involvement with the Surface Pro 4 case ended with Microsoft's launch of a replacement program for affected devices. You should be able to find more information on the replacement program in the following link: https://support.microsoft.com/

Regarding the battery swell--or any problem related to the Surface--a case would have to be brought through arbitration; that is, as an individual. Everyone would have to bring their claim as an individual, not as a collective. Since we are a class action firm, we don't tend to focus on arbitration proceedings.

I purchased my Surface 4 Pro in May of 2016, and it's been pretty lightly used since I've owned it. In mid-March 2020, I noticed the discoloring and warped screen. I found the issue in the MS Community, and called technical support, reporting the issue as a safety concern. They offered me a replacement for my unit for $450. I told them thanks, but no thanks. I've since filed a report with the US Consumer Product Safety Commission. I saw one other similar complaint on their web site. We should all make official complaints for what's obviously a manufacturing flaw. I included links to this discussion and another one that is in this MS community as references for the CPSC.

Perhaps if there are enough safety reports on this product, MS will have to recall the computers and provide a consistent, satisfactory solution to those of us who purchased this defective computer.

    USCPS is located at:   https://www.cpsc.gov/

Microsoft said don't use it can catch on fire. I am out of warranty, so they  will replace it for $450.00+tax. I paid a lot for this computer and expected it to last for a few more years. They have known about this problem for a time, maybe they should have told us before we were out of warranty. I'm 74 and on Social Security and hoped after paying a lot it would last a little longer.  I  am done with Microsoft.

You are correct. Microsoft is a company in decline.

Microsoft has replaced their faulty product for no cost for many.

You must have been unlucky enough to encounter the same scrooge i did.

I think you should try taking your dangerous, faulty unit to another store and you are likely to get a totally different response.

Good luck. Once you pay they won’t listen.
