Surface Pro 3 Touch Screen not responding properly

So far, I've had the surface pro 3 for 2 days and it's been working perfectly. Today however, the screen decides to act up. Only certain spots of screen won't recognize my touch while the rest of the screen works fine. I have no clue how this started, and how to fix it. Any suggestions? Thanks.

I'm glad it helped :) it's actually a fix from N-trig, the company that makes the touch panel for both Sony's Duo and the Surface.

Can anyone post the link to the actual tool?

Here is the link for the tool I used to get the screen working again.

Worked like a charm. Thanks.

Hi LucasVertrees,

Thank you for visiting and posting in the Microsoft Community! I am sorry to hear the touch screen on your Surface is not working or responding properly. I can tell that you are worried about this situation, and it is certainly understandable, taking into consideration this is a new device. I will be glad to assist and help provide the best possible solution!

First and foremost, please make sure you have all and latest Windows updates installed. This is very important. Here you can find instructions on how to check for updates:

Also, if the touchscreen doesn’t respond correctly to touch—if some gestures don’t work, the charms don’t appear when you swipe in from the right, or if the touchscreen responds slowly or not at all—try these solutions:

Additionally, you can also try to update or/and uninstall and reinstallthe Touch drivers. Here is how:

  1. From the Desktop, swipe from the right and select Settings.
  2. Select Control Panel.
  3. Select Device Manager.
  4. Select Surface Pro Touch Controller Firmware.
  5. Select the tab under Driver
  6. Select Update Driver Software.
  7. Select “Browse my computer for driver software”.
  8. Select "Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer"
  9. Select Surface Pro Touch Controller Firmware.
  10. Select Next
  11. Let the install finish.
  12. Restart your Surface.

If after the previous steps the issue persists, repeat the steps from 1-6 and click Uninstall, then restart your Surface and allow Windows to reinstall the driver.

***Please DO NOT check the box saying "Delete the driver software for this device".***

Please note, if none of the above steps work, it is recommended you Refresh your Surface as shown here:

We hope these solutions prove useful! Please keep us posted!

We are always here to help!

Best Wishes,

I recently purchased a surface pro 3 that I have run into a problem with. Pen and touch are not functioning within a half inch stripe on the screen, going from a little right of the camera to the bottom of the screen. Whenever I draw with touch in one note, there is a blank space between the two sides of the dead spot. When I use the pen, the digitizer incorrectly senses the location of the pen, and the resulting writing/drawing is not correct, but still connected. I have linked an image of examples here. I have tried restarting and going through windows updates, but it has not been resolved. I am beginning to think that it is a manufacturing defect, because it is less than a week old.

Thanks

Open the control panel and look for TabletPC Settings, Reset and then calibrate.

Hello G3Technologies,

Thank you for posting to the Microsoft Community. My apologies for the inconvenience with your newly purchased Surface Pro 3.

To answer your question, the issue you've experienced isn't a common issue, thus nothing to be worried about and hopefully the replacement Surface will work to your full satisfaction.

At this point to address the issue at hand, because you have done intensive troubleshooting steps such as a reset without any success, it does sound as though you will need an exchange.

Depending on what is most convenient for you, you can:

  1. Open a service request yourself, using our Online Service Center, or
  2. Contact our Technical Support Team here.

Please let us know if you have any further questions.

Hello AntiApple

Thanks for reaching out to us.  Sorry to hear you are facing a dead area on the screen of your Surface Pro 3.

Does this also appear with normal touch, navigation, in other apps?  When did this start happening?  Is the dead area consistent, or does it shift with use or screen orientation?

Try a two button restart:

Power off the Surface Pro

Hold Volume Up and the Power button for 15 seconds

Release buttons

Wait 5-10 seconds

Power on the Surface

Consider a reset.  Returning Surface to a near out of the box condition, followed by installing all updates has sometimes returned functionality in odd cases like this.

If nothing helps, contact your retailer or Store, or reach out to Support.  You can get ahold of them Here or Here.

Best regards
