Battery drain overnight while shutdown

Lately, after I shutdown (full shutdown, not sleep or hibernate) my fully charged Surface Laptop 2 at night, I turn it on in the morning and find that the battery has lost around 25% power overnight! What's going on and how can I fix this?

The laptop is only about 6 months old and the battery seems to be in good health.

Is this a Surface specific issue, or is it also related to the Intel power management bug? I'm just curious 🤔

What's the Intel power management bug?

I believe what triggers this issue is s process during a full shutdown(not restart).  I had all updates and didn't have this issue.  I rarely shutdown my computer completely as I always use standby and/or restart.  I was noticing poor battery life of about 4 hours so tried some troubleshooting which recommended a full shutdown.

Since then the battery life is worse, the device shows only 74% battery after being plugged in all night and it won't charge again until restarted.  Even if I get a 100% charge, it will stay 100% for an hour then drop below 90% or less in a minute after a bit of use.

I really hope there is a fix for this soon or someone from Microsoft at least provides an update.  I'm worried there is permanent damage and warranty is only active for a few more months.

If I don't hear something soon I will submit for warranty regardless.

My Surface Laptop 2 is having this issue since May 2019. My case is a little different... I left my SL2 plugged in for weeks (without using battery) then one day I turned it off, unplugged it, and turned it back on in an hour, the battery level dropped to 75%. Then I plugged it in, the Surface was actually charging. Once it was charged to 100%, I turned it off, unplugged it and turned it back on in a few hours, the battery was still 100%. I thought the problem was solved, but I was wrong. After being plugged in for a few weeks, I turned it off, unplugged it, and turned it back on, the battery level dropped to around 75% again. This has happened a few times to me...

So in my case this "dramatic drain" only happens when I leave it plugged in for a long period of time (battery showing 100% before I unplug it). Anyone is experiencing the same issue? I wonder I might have a defective battery that drains too fast while not using and the Surface Firmware does not detect this drain either so it does not charge the battey when plugged in. But when the computer restarts, it recalculates the battery level and finds out the actual battery level has dropped to 75%...

No, I definitely hope that is not the case.

The first time I reached out to them was sometime in August too, back when I was using my originally purchased device. The agent told me the battery is faulty and asked me to get a replacement. Then the replacement device also had the same problem. So I got it replaced again, but only after an email confirmation that they will escalate the matter and issue me a brand new device if the problem repeats again.

Obviously, the problem repeated in the 2nd replacement device too. So now they have connected me to an agent at a higher tier and asked for details like address and copy of the original bill so they can process things ahead. They told me, in the meantime the developers are working on a fix so the update should be out soon.

I should hear back from them in a few days. So let's see what they have to say.
