I have the power settings set to NOT restart when the power is plugged in and NOT to go into sleep mode.

Even with these settings the laptop restarts randomly. I'll be writing code and it restarts. Its random.

I stumbled upon this other similar thread:

    https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/surface/forum/all/surface-laptop-3-restarts-on-lid-close/57ef4668-5aad-4bb6-a3d8-68b97c9452ab?page=3

See comments from Alireza, about the device manager setting:

    "Device Manager>System devices>AMD Audio Coprocessor >

then in power management tab : UNCHECK allow the computer to turn off the device... "

I have tried this and whilst it is early days it is looking good. Obviously I have also done the CPU upgrade and my machine is fully patched. I also ran the Surface Diagnostic tool which showed no errors.

The fans are even now very quiet. Fingers crossed this change sticks, but the real test for me is leaving it overnight going into sleep mode. I have only done several '5 minute' sleep tests.

I tired that but made no difference for me....luckily I`ve been shipped a new device and no issues so far ( 24hrs +) so can only assume its batch of h/w issues.

I've gone 24hr and looking ok still.

Can I ask how did the replacement go with all the MS stores closed? Did you have to return yours first (you paid for postage) and they upon receipt sent you a new one?

I`m in UK so not sure if the same process or not but logged a ticket online, went through various steps ( rebuild etc ) and eventually will send you a shipping label to send back and they shipped a new one after a couple of days which took approx 6-7 days in total from start.

Because they had only just sent me a replacement device for another h/w issue and it had this issue right out of the box they might have been more supportive of a replacement.
