I have the power settings set to NOT restart when the power is plugged in and NOT to go into sleep mode.
Even with these settings the laptop restarts randomly. I'll be writing code and it restarts. Its random.

I had 4 problem free years with my Surface Book until the batteries (both in the keyboard and screen) started swelling. I finally decided to just buy a new one, but since I have spent all this time setting up a new one, I hate to return it and am seriously hoping for a fix as it is obvious MULTIPLE people are all having this same issue. Was finally able to download the Surface patch, but not sure it fixed it. Come on Microsoft, fix this !
This update has made no difference. Laptop still randomly crashes and reboots when in use, or going to sleep. Plugged in or battery operated it makes no difference.
"The system has rebooted without cleanly shutting down first. This error could be caused if the system stopped responding, crashed, or lost power unexpectedly."
"The previous system shutdown at 11:30:49 on 20/09/2020 was unexpected."
I'm requesting my money back as even a replacement does not seem to fix anything as other have said.

So far since installing the September Surface update, mine has been stable (for 10 days). About the same time I installed, I also received new Windows patches and I've heard there were issues as well so you might want to verify you have both.
I had a LOT of issues just getting the update to install so I would recommend that you verify that the most current firmware actually did install by checking the list of firmware updates from https://support.microsoft.com/help/4526150 against the Firmware in Device Manager, just to be sure.

I did the original update through the windows update system.
I just downloaded and flashed manually. so far I am about 3 hours in and no forced restarting. So everyone else give it a shot!
