Surface Laptop 3 Faint Buzzing Sound

Hello,

I’ve got the i5 8GB Surface Laptop 3 (13.5-inch), and today, while browsing the internet, I noticed a fairly faint  buzzing sound coming from under the keyboard. It was faint enough you couldn’t hear it from a couple metres away, and sometimes buzzed continuously, other times buzzed in short repetitive bursts.

It didn’t sound like the fan to me, so I opened up the task manager to see if browsing was straining the computer in some way.

I have updated the computer completely, but the buzzing persisted.

Is this a normal electronics problem? Is it actually just the fan? Or is it possibly a defective unit?

Edit/Update:

I took the device into the MS Store today to see if there was something wrong. The staff took it into the back and tested it. They found increasing the computer's workload caused the sound to increase and described it as a popping static-y sound. They replaced the device and I have a new one now. Unfortunately, I've found through usage that this one is also making the sound. I am waiting to see if a firmware update reduces the noise since it seems pervasive across the devices.

    FOUND A SOLUTION

Don't bother dealing with Microsoft, it's just a straight defect they're not willing to fix

    .

Download Winstep Nexus 10 dock. It's just some toolbar to make a PC look like a Mac's desktop layout. As soon as you start running that, the buzzing stops. You can remove the icons from the Nexus dock so it doesn't clutter up your desktop either. Just keep that running whenever your PC's on and it'll fix the issue.

I had the exact same issue, constant buzzing noise in the upper right corner of the keyboard. I managed to get rid of the buzzing noise by downloading the nexus dock but have since returned the laptop as I cannot justify spending £1000 on a laptop where external programmes are needed to be installed to remove Microsoft problems.

I recommend returning the laptop for a refund if you are having the same problem and look elsewhere for a new laptop. E.g. MacBook M1

Me too. Bought mine in Germany (i5, 128 GB, platinum). Just installed Nexus, no more annoying noise. But when I read through the whole thread I have no hope that Microsoft will ever solve this issue.

Thanks for your feedback. I bought a Surface Book 3 but returned it because the touch and pen input kept failing for no obvious reason. I was keen to buy the Surface Laptop 3 instead but I researched it and found out it has a buzzing sound that Microsoft can't seem to fix - I think they are holding out for the Laptop 4 to be released later in the year as a fix? Meantime, I bought the Dell XPS 9500 for £600 less - let's hope it works well!
