Surface Laptop 3 Faint Buzzing Sound

Hello,

I’ve got the i5 8GB Surface Laptop 3 (13.5-inch), and today, while browsing the internet, I noticed a fairly faint  buzzing sound coming from under the keyboard. It was faint enough you couldn’t hear it from a couple metres away, and sometimes buzzed continuously, other times buzzed in short repetitive bursts.

It didn’t sound like the fan to me, so I opened up the task manager to see if browsing was straining the computer in some way.

I have updated the computer completely, but the buzzing persisted.

Is this a normal electronics problem? Is it actually just the fan? Or is it possibly a defective unit?

Edit/Update:

I took the device into the MS Store today to see if there was something wrong. The staff took it into the back and tested it. They found increasing the computer's workload caused the sound to increase and described it as a popping static-y sound. They replaced the device and I have a new one now. Unfortunately, I've found through usage that this one is also making the sound. I am waiting to see if a firmware update reduces the noise since it seems pervasive across the devices.

Thanks will surely try. Infact the buzzing sound is so irritating, that I have stopped using Surface Laptop #3

The reality is that this noise should not have been there in the first place, and if there is a driver issue, then it should be resoved by MS Technical team.

But thanks for sharing your input.

Hi Puneet , can you tell me if the sound was higher than normal or just faint noise

There is no solution from MS Surface team.

Unfortunately I am stuck with this machine as I missed the timeline for return. This is a manufacturing defect, and as per my understanding it happens in 10-15% laptop. MS Surface does not think its important to fix this issue.

My true suggestion is that if you can live with the noise, and then continue with it, as it is a great laptop otherwise.

But if you cannot stand this irritating noise, then immediately return the laptop. I regret this mistake.

    Thanks

Hi Puneet , I get what you are trying to say . But honestly, the buzzing noise goes away by putting the performance to best and what I did was uninstall and reinstall my battery driver , doing this actually made my fan start moving fast but it did cool the laptop down . So what i recommend is

    1 Reinstall your battery driver

    1. Try surface diagnostic toolkit
    2. Move to either low power mode of best performance when using for long period of time ex: 4 to 5 hours

Just as a note to all: all these have helped my surface laptop 3 from the faint buzzing issue. I had the same issue for mine, it keeps coming now too after this but is so much silent than before trying these steps , if this doesn’t work too, the only option is to force shutdown. , or we just have to live with it. Please try these steps and tell em if it worked or not.

    Hope this helps. :)

    Hello keegzzz,

Thank you for reaching out Microsoft Community. May we know if this is happening if the PSU is plugged in and when Surface is on Battery?

    Please keep us posted.

    Regards,

    KarenJune_F

I am having this problem. But it is only when the surface device is connected to the mains via the power supply unit. More significant through headphones. When I am touching the metal body, this noise reduces.
