sound keeps muting

I was listening to a song on the tablet and then went back to the start page to do something else and all of a sudden I thought my song stopped playing but it hadn't. The sound muted itself.

Then I set up the tablet so I could view my facebook pictures on the tablet. As I was looking at them, I noticed it also showed some videos I uploaded to facebook so I wanted to see what they looked like on the tablet but there was no sound. I thought it was because they were from facebook but I checked the speaker and noticed the sound got muted again.

Why does this happen and is it suppose to happen?

Greetings everyone,

Regarding the issue of having the sound mute randomly, and in TH IT's case, unmute, please get in touch with the Surface Technical Support to exchange the Touch / Type Cover. We're still investigating the issue, however it appears that the cover may be the issue.

You can do the exchange yourself here: http://myservice.surface.com or by contacting our Technical support team here: http://www.microsoft.com/surface/support/contact-us/.

Please let us know if the exchanged Touch Cover / Type Cover resolves the issue for you.

A point was made a while ago that it may be an error with a particular batch (or batches) of covers.  This being said, it may be prudent to at least check if your replacement cover was from the same batch or line as you old one...?  It may even be a random glitch in the manufacturing process of the covers that fixes the issue for some people.

Still encountering the issue here.  I can further add that it does appear to more readily happen when I first touch the touch pad after doing something else for a while, so it may indicated an accumulated charge that when discharged resembles the "mute" signal and the Surface reacts accordingly.

It also just recently occurred when I put my lapdesk with the Surface on it, open and standing with cover attached, onto a pillow with a drop of a few cm.

Thinking that I might just get the cover exchanged seeing as there doesn't appear to be much progress in here, even though there are posts stating that there have been no improvement.  Maybe I'll get lucky with a latter batch or something that just happens to not have the issue :-/

I replaced my cover about two weeks ago and I have not had the muting problem since, I'm just throwing this up here maybe it will help someone, but the batch number on my cover is 104481323951/ model #1515 / N1364 Z396

I also replaced my cover and have had no issues since. Never thought about putting the cover model up before, it's a great idea. Mine is model # 1515 Lot NO./ Date: 1241

    Hello,

i also have a muting cover. The Person at the german customer support wanted me to reset my system before replacing the cover. Does this have sense in your opinion? (i want to avoid having to set up my surface again.)

    Further Explanation:

mine keeps also muting. It happens sometimes when the cover is attached and folded to the front into typing mode and then when you move the cover a Little bit - then it mutes. So it mutes often when i use it on a pillow on the Sofa, on the lap or i just grab it to put the surface elsewhere.

    I have a german Cover. model 1515. Nr: 078382724251.

I called the german support. The person said, he didn't hear of the problem yet and asked me to first try to refresh and if it didn't work then reset the surface. If the surface would keep muting, they would replace it. I thought about it, and now I would argue that there is no sign to interpretate a software Problem rather than a hardware problem, so a reset wouldnt change anything for my cover. i really don't want to spend again the hours setting the whole system up again. If i am right (maybe i am not, just tell me), can you advise the customer support not to get the people to reset their system if they have covers muting their surface?
