I was listening to a song on the tablet and then went back to the start page to do something else and all of a sudden I thought my song stopped playing but it hadn't. The sound muted itself.

Then I set up the tablet so I could view my facebook pictures on the tablet. As I was looking at them, I noticed it also showed some videos I uploaded to facebook so I wanted to see what they looked like on the tablet but there was no sound. I thought it was because they were from facebook but I checked the speaker and noticed the sound got muted again.

Why does this happen and is it suppose to happen?

Greetings everyone,

Regarding the issue of having the sound mute randomly, and in TH IT's case, unmute, please get in touch with the Surface Technical Support to exchange the Touch / Type Cover. We're still investigating the issue, however it appears that the cover may be the issue.

You can do the exchange yourself here: http://myservice.surface.com or by contacting our Technical support team here: http://www.microsoft.com/surface/support/contact-us/.

Please let us know if the exchanged Touch Cover / Type Cover resolves the issue for you.

    Hi All,

We are continuing to investigating this issue. Can someone please tell me if the volume is actually muted or if the volume drops to 0? You call tell the difference by going to the desktop and looking at the icons in the bottom right side of the screen. If the speaker icon has a red circle with a slash through it then its muted.

Thanks for your assistance in tracking down this issue.

    Thanks!

I can confirm that the volume mutes and does not drop to 0.  All that is need to restore volume to its previous state is to tap the mute/unmute button on the touch cover and the sound returns to its previous volume.

Yep, same here for me.  Hitting the volume up button on the tablet itself restores it to the previous volume.

Just a personal note, after using the tablet all day yesterday (with the touch cover), this did not happen a single time.  It seems to be incredibly infrequent and inconsistent.
