sound keeps muting

I was listening to a song on the tablet and then went back to the start page to do something else and all of a sudden I thought my song stopped playing but it hadn't. The sound muted itself.

Then I set up the tablet so I could view my facebook pictures on the tablet. As I was looking at them, I noticed it also showed some videos I uploaded to facebook so I wanted to see what they looked like on the tablet but there was no sound. I thought it was because they were from facebook but I checked the speaker and noticed the sound got muted again.

Why does this happen and is it suppose to happen?

Greetings everyone,

Regarding the issue of having the sound mute randomly, and in TH IT's case, unmute, please get in touch with the Surface Technical Support to exchange the Touch / Type Cover. We're still investigating the issue, however it appears that the cover may be the issue.

You can do the exchange yourself here: http://myservice.surface.com or by contacting our Technical support team here: http://www.microsoft.com/surface/support/contact-us/.

Please let us know if the exchanged Touch Cover / Type Cover resolves the issue for you.

    Hello Dewain,

If you are still having this issue, please perform the following steps in order to ensure that there is a clean connection between the Surface and your Touch or Type Cover.

First, connect and disconnect the Touch or Type Cover several times to see if it is just a bad connection.

Next, moisten a lint-free cloth (LCD or an eyeglass cleaning cloth works great) with a little rubbing alcohol and rub the cloth over the contact points on the Touch or Type Cover.

You will need to let the Touch or Type Cover sit for a few minutes to allow for the evaporation of the rubbing alcohol.

Finally, reattach the Touch or Type Cover back to the Surface.

If this does not resolve the issue, you may want to try and Refresh your Surface.

Let us know if this helps.

I've got exactly the same problem.  It seems pretty random.

I can confirm that the volume mutes and does not drop to 0.  All that is need to restore volume to its previous state is to tap the mute/unmute button on the touch cover and the sound returns to its previous volume.

Yep, same here for me.  Hitting the volume up button on the tablet itself restores it to the previous volume.

Just a personal note, after using the tablet all day yesterday (with the touch cover), this did not happen a single time.  It seems to be incredibly infrequent and inconsistent.
