sound keeps muting

I was listening to a song on the tablet and then went back to the start page to do something else and all of a sudden I thought my song stopped playing but it hadn't. The sound muted itself.

Then I set up the tablet so I could view my facebook pictures on the tablet. As I was looking at them, I noticed it also showed some videos I uploaded to facebook so I wanted to see what they looked like on the tablet but there was no sound. I thought it was because they were from facebook but I checked the speaker and noticed the sound got muted again.

Why does this happen and is it suppose to happen?

Hello all.

I’d like to update you on this issue regarding random muting of Surface.   After further investigation, it is recommended that you connect your Touch Cover and ensure any and all updates have been installed to Surface.

To check for updates:

  1. Open PC Settings, by swiping in from right edge (or, if using a mouse, point to upper-right corner of screen)
  2. Tap or click Settings
  3. Tap or click Change PC settings
  4. Under PC settings, tap or click Windows Update
  5. Tap or click Check for Updates

Regarding the issue of having the sound mute randomly, and in TH IT's case, unmute, please get in touch with the Surface Technical Support to exchange the Touch / Type Cover. We're still investigating the issue, however it appears that the cover may be the issue.

Please let us know if the exchanged Touch Cover / Type Cover resolves the issue for you.

    What issue are you having with storing media files on the microSD card?

    Music / Video / Photos cannot find files on the SD card. The apps appear to only include files that are in a Library. Windows RT thinks the card is "removable" and won't allow adding files from the card to a library. Adding the card to a Library per directions here http://www.winsupersite.com/article/windows8/surface-tip-microsd-content-libraries-metro-apps-144658 and then forcing Windows to reindex through Index Options -> Advanced -> Rebuild will make the files visible in the app but adding and removing files is still ignored by the app. Further, attempting to open the file in the app shows indexed files but files that have not yet been indexed are invisible. I can see all the files in the Libraries through the desktop Windows Explorer. I can even play them from that window. I could go on with more details about the behavior let me know if you need more.

    It's a real mess. The apps are clueless when working with real files.

    Hello everyone,

    An update to the Music app was released today and is being rolled out across all regions. The update was meant to fix an issue of having Music stop playing when the screen dimmed / turned off.

    If anyone has experienced the issue, please do the following to get the update and let us know if the issue has been resolved:

    My surface still pauses when the screen is dimmed / turned off. While the screen is off, the music stutters on and off until I touch the screen and make it light up again.

    These bugs and the issue with storing media files on the MicroSD card have made Surface useless as a media device. I hope they are resolved quickly.
