sound keeps muting

I was listening to a song on the tablet and then went back to the start page to do something else and all of a sudden I thought my song stopped playing but it hadn't. The sound muted itself.

Then I set up the tablet so I could view my facebook pictures on the tablet. As I was looking at them, I noticed it also showed some videos I uploaded to facebook so I wanted to see what they looked like on the tablet but there was no sound. I thought it was because they were from facebook but I checked the speaker and noticed the sound got muted again.

Why does this happen and is it suppose to happen?

Greetings everyone,

Regarding the issue of having the sound mute randomly, and in TH IT's case, unmute, please get in touch with the Surface Technical Support to exchange the Touch / Type Cover. We're still investigating the issue, however it appears that the cover may be the issue.

You can do the exchange yourself here: http://myservice.surface.com or by contacting our Technical support team here: http://www.microsoft.com/surface/support/contact-us/.

Please let us know if the exchanged Touch Cover / Type Cover resolves the issue for you.

    For what it's worth:

I too am certain, that it is not only the cover. I have the effect quite often now which is really annoying in meetings when I am taking notes.

From my experience it happens mostly when I connect or disconnect the touch cover. Sometimes it happened when the cover was connected but I can almost reproduce it with detaching and attaching the cover.

I am a bit paranoid now that the sound is on, so I check very often. Please fix this soon!

I am just going to return my surface and purchase the ASUS Vivo w/ LTE.  This is really irritating for  Microsoft to tell me just to switch out my touchcover.  This is not a solution for me.  I believe it's an issue with the actual surface and they don't want to admit it.  To have all these problem with their top device is not a good sign.

I have a Surface RT 64GB and have the same problem and its getting really annoying. I was hoping the new updates would fix this but the problem persists. Its not the touch cover as I have tried with the cover both on and off. Sometimes the problem seems to go away after a reboot.
