sound keeps muting

I was listening to a song on the tablet and then went back to the start page to do something else and all of a sudden I thought my song stopped playing but it hadn't. The sound muted itself.

Then I set up the tablet so I could view my facebook pictures on the tablet. As I was looking at them, I noticed it also showed some videos I uploaded to facebook so I wanted to see what they looked like on the tablet but there was no sound. I thought it was because they were from facebook but I checked the speaker and noticed the sound got muted again.

Why does this happen and is it suppose to happen?

Greetings everyone,

Regarding the issue of having the sound mute randomly, and in TH IT's case, unmute, please get in touch with the Surface Technical Support to exchange the Touch / Type Cover. We're still investigating the issue, however it appears that the cover may be the issue.

You can do the exchange yourself here: http://myservice.surface.com or by contacting our Technical support team here: http://www.microsoft.com/surface/support/contact-us/.

Please let us know if the exchanged Touch Cover / Type Cover resolves the issue for you.

It's definitely a hardware issue, I got my touch cover replaced since it was splitting, never once did I had a muting issue until I got the new one this weekend and, I've had my surface since november.

Same here. The quality control on these products is really bad. The original Touch Cover I bought with my Surface on 10/26 did not exhibit this issue, but a replacement that I got for the splitting issue seems to be the culprit. I've already had to exchange my Surface RT twice because of a short in the hardware buttons and a bad screen. I already have 5 pages of receipts from the Microsoft Store from all the exchanges. I just don't know if this issue has been fixed in newer ones to make it worth the drive and effort to exchange the Touch Cover again, only to find out that it's still not fixed.

Seems like the problem is still around then, maybe people have given up reporting on it. Mine mutes just like yours Kevin, usually after I have closed up the touchscreen to put it to sleep. I'll live with it for a while as I don't want to send it back and then maybe check if Microsoft are doing anything about it in a few weeks.
