sound keeps muting

I was listening to a song on the tablet and then went back to the start page to do something else and all of a sudden I thought my song stopped playing but it hadn't. The sound muted itself.

Then I set up the tablet so I could view my facebook pictures on the tablet. As I was looking at them, I noticed it also showed some videos I uploaded to facebook so I wanted to see what they looked like on the tablet but there was no sound. I thought it was because they were from facebook but I checked the speaker and noticed the sound got muted again.

Why does this happen and is it suppose to happen?

Greetings everyone,

Regarding the issue of having the sound mute randomly, and in TH IT's case, unmute, please get in touch with the Surface Technical Support to exchange the Touch / Type Cover. We're still investigating the issue, however it appears that the cover may be the issue.

You can do the exchange yourself here: http://myservice.surface.com or by contacting our Technical support team here: http://www.microsoft.com/surface/support/contact-us/.

Please let us know if the exchanged Touch Cover / Type Cover resolves the issue for you.

I'm on my second touch cover and the problem still persists. What makes me nervous is that if I'm 0 for 2 then what hope do I have for a third. How extensive is this potential bad batch? I'm certainly hoping it's a software issue, and as a developer myself I'm having the worst luck reproducing the mute issue. Some times I'm not touching anything and some times my hand is in the top leftish corner... thanks for all the support in this thread

Can we just do the exchange in a store?

Well, my experience has been different. I bought the 32GB bundle but support were quite happy to take just the cover back without the whole thing. It was collected by UPS today.

Granted, what I really wanted was to send the touch cover back, pay a little extra and have the type instead since I personally think the touch cover is truly awful. The only way I could do that was to send the whole bundle back and there's no way I'm doing that do I'll just take get the brand new sealed replacement touch cover and flog it on eBay, buying myself a type cover.

I will add that my experience may be different because my touch cover is physically broken. After just 2 days it split by the catch exposing the circuit traces underneath.
