I just now tried a hot unplug-replug: Everything came back up except my keyboard. Unplugging-replugging the USB cable fixed the keyboard.
Surface Book w/ new Dock. Dock fails after a time and requires reboot of Surface Book.
I've got a new Dock connected to a Surface Book. The dock has several USB devices connected, a LAN Ethernet cable, and a DP monitor. The dock works fine for a time after boot; however, connectivity to the dock begins to bounce. The USB devices and monitor disconnect/reconnect rapidly. Removing and reapplying power to the dock has no positive effect. Disconnecting/reconnecting the connector from the surface also has no positive effect. The only solution is to reboot the Surface Book. After a reboot the dock functions as expected for a time, and then the process starts all over.
All of the Windows updates have been applied.
Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Blake

2015-12-08T17:53:01+00:00 We are talking about the new dock. All my issues start when unplug the computer from the dock. If I boot up with the dock connected, everything works as expected. I don't have issues with the Ethernet.
I'm almost certain that all the issues are related to power management. I'm doing some experiments and will report back to this thread if I find any solutions.
Thanks for your info

2015-12-13T19:11:57+00:00 After booting up with the hub plugged in, I just went into device manager and clicked on every USB hub in the device manager, unchecking the "allow the computer to turn off this device to save power" option on every node under the USB section that had that option.
That seems to have addressed the issue for all day today. I don't know which ones I might be able to re-check, but I'm thinking of disconnecting the dock and rechecking anything that is left.

2015-12-13T19:38:25+00:00 I exchanged the dock and the next dock was even worse. I did a clean install and the unit wouldn't detect the keyboard or track pad every other boot. Finally find fixed that. Didn't fix the dock issue at all. Installed Cortana and the fan started coming on. Did some investigation and discovered it was now generating 100k events per hour. Got fed up, took the unit back to MS and returned it. Bought a Dell Xps 1500 with better specs, 4k display, 16gb/512 ssd, fast as **** and got back $500 in the deal. Saw that MS apologized to the Surface community and realized that the dock issue wasn't a priority. So far loving the xps 15 and no strange errors...

It's this kind of stock answer that infuriates me. I also have not called support on this issue because I'll spend the first hour on the phone with the rep taking me through all these same steps before we ever get to the meat of the issue. Then I'll quickly get out of the rep's depth because he hasn't ever solved an issue with the docking station before.
How do I know? Because I already went through this drill with another issue. And to be fair to Microsoft, I went through the same thing with DirecTV a few weeks ago. I just wish I could start with Level 3 tech support from the beginning.
My replacement dock has the same issues, so I'll be returning it. I wish it wasn't too late for me to return the whole laptop.
My next step is to purchase a cheap ethernet adapter that will plug into a USB port and see if can at least keep my internet running while docked. If I can unplug and replug a USB device to get it to work again, that's a lot more efficient than having to reboot to fix the issue. And it will help me narrow down where the failure is occurring.
Nothing like doing my own tech support...
