A case was created last year using the Premium experience, but upon opening it in the new experience, some of the hold locations were missing. Is it necessary to go through all cases to update holds for the new experience?

We understand you're noticing that some hold locations appear to be missing when viewing an existing eDiscovery (Premium) case in the new Microsoft Purview eDiscovery experience. This is expected behavior due to architectural differences between the two models.

Classic (Premium) eDiscovery cases use case-level hold locations (e.g., mailbox, SharePoint site).
The new eDiscovery (Premium) experience uses a custodian- and policy-based model, where data sources are linked through custodians or directly assigned in hold policies.

As a result, hold locations configured in the classic Premium experience do not automatically appear or carry over when viewing the case in the new experience. This is why certain hold locations may appear to be missing.

To ensure continuity of your legal hold coverage:

Review and document active holds in existing Premium cases.

Recreate those holds in the new experience using the Hold policies tab by assigning:

Custodians (users or groups)
Non-custodial data sources (e.g., specific mailboxes, sites)
Optional filters (keywords, date range, etc.)

There is currently no automated migration tool between the classic and new experiences.
