Problems with printers on remote desktops (windows server 2022)

Hi.

We have a problem with giving access to a redirected printer for normal users that are logging in to our servers using .rdp.

At the moment, the printer shows up correctly only for a person with administrator rights.

The drivers are installed on both the user's PC and the Windows Terminal that they are connecting to, the printer works fine on their PC but they do not see it on their remote desktop.

Currently, our group policies that deal with printers look like this:

disabled: Windows Components/Remote Desktop Services/Remote Desktop Session Host/Printer Redirection/Use Remote Desktop Easy Print printer driver first

disabled: Windows Components/Remote Desktop Services/Remote Desktop Session Host/Printer Redirection/Do not allow client printer redirection

disabled:  Windows Components/Remote Desktop Services/Remote Desktop Session Host/Printer Redirection/Do not set default client printer to be default printer in a session

We had to disable the Easy Print printer driver because it caused issues with the Zebra printer (the redirected one didn't show up in the app provided by the Zebra company).

There are also some issues with the setting 'Do not set default client printer to be default printer in a session', even with it disabled users still have problems with their default printer not being set as their default printer in a session. Instead, in a session their default printer is the one that was set as default by the administrator - but it only happens sometimes.

What else could we change in our group policies to deal with those issues?

    Hello,

Thank you for posting in the Microsoft community forum.

Pay special attention to the following aspects when troubleshooting this problem:

    1. Check the Settings in the.rdp file.

Before using the.rdp file for remote connection, right-click Open Mode to Notepad and ensure that printer redirection is enabled: redirectprinters:i:1

    1. Check that the latest drivers provided by Zebra are installed on the client computer and RDS server. Also note that the Zebra printer driver needs to match the system version.
    2. Check user permissions on the server.
    • On the server, open Control Panel. Select Devices and Printers.
    • Locate and right-click the target printer and select "Printer Properties".
    • In the Printer Properties window, select the Security TAB. Click the "Add" button to add the user or user group that needs to access the printer, and set the printing permission.

I hope this helps. If you have any follow-up questions, please contact us.

    Best regards

    Jacen
